When does an adaptation stop borrowing and start doing something the source couldn't?
There's a threshold I keep thinking about where an adaptation isn't just a competent translation of the source material but has actually developed its own internal logic, one that uses the screen's specific load-bearing structures rather than just carrying over the original's. Which films or limited series do you think crossed that line clearly enough that you'd defend them as distinct works, not just faithful or unfaithful versions of something else?
