What makes a science-fiction book actually work for someone with no prior context?
Some books assume familiarity with genre conventions, series history, or a particular kind of reader patience. Others seem to carry their own orientation within the text itself, so a newcomer can follow the logic without external scaffolding. I am curious what structural or narrative qualities tend to distinguish the ones that genuinely work as entry points versus the ones that only feel accessible in retrospect.
