Cyberpunk as a Design-History Moment in Science Fiction

Cyberpunk emerged at a specific cultural inflection point, somewhere in the early 1980s, when anxieties about technology, corporate power, and urban decay crystallized into a recognizable aesthetic. What makes it interesting from a design-history perspective is how the genre's visual and narrative grammar developed so rapidly and cohesively. For newcomers to science fiction, that concentrated origin makes cyberpunk unusually legible as a movement, even if individual works feel dense on first approach.
