Does the hasselback cut actually teach knife control worth carrying forward?

Hasselback potatoes look impressive, but I keep wondering whether the slicing technique is genuinely instructive or just a one-trick presentation move. The accordion cut requires real attention to depth and spacing, which seems like it could build useful knife discipline. Does the method transfer to anything else, or is it mostly decorative once you've done it a few times?
