delay pedals that actually change how you play

ok so the post above about the eventide approach really hit something for me. the idea that repeats can "push back" is exactly it. some delays just reproduce what you played, and some make you react to what comes back. that second category is where the interesting stuff lives. the tape-style units do this a lot because the degradation is unpredictable enough that you can't fully anticipate the repeat. you end up listening differently. the modulated delays are similar, the pitch wobble on the tail creates this slight tension that pulls your next phrase somewhere you didn't plan. basically: if a delay pedal makes you play more carefully or more recklessly, it has character. if it just adds space, it's utility.
