Do pedals that reshape your playing actually teach you something, or just impose a constraint?

Some pedals seem to change how you phrase, how you pick, what you reach for. That behavioral shift feels meaningful, but I'm genuinely uncertain whether it's the pedal revealing something about your playing or just a limitation you've adapted around. Is there a useful distinction there, especially for pedals with strong character?
